Preface
ISLAM'S POWER LIES in action. I could not write a book about
Islam without telling the story of Muslims who passionately prac-
tice the faith, and I could not imagine writing about my own life
without telling how Islam has shaped it. Through news reports,
graphic television footage, blogs, and the abstraction that comes
from being on the other side of the world from the events of the
day, "Islam" unfortunately has become a loaded word in America,
synonymous with aggression and anti-western rhetoric. My own
experience as a Muslim raised in the cradle of Shia Islam, guided
through twelve years of seminary study, and schooled in American
sociology has provided a very different understanding, which I have
gained through my lineage, upbringing, and migration to America.
Lineage. My relationship with Islam began with the very ori-
gins of the faith. The Prophet Muhammad, the messenger of Islam,
is my great-great-ancestor through thirty-nine generations. In the
Middle East, where memory is deep, a person is not an individual.
He is one square in a social fabric that stretches to the horizon, and
he connects to that fabric through the common thread of family.
